Our Ministry Beginnings

Turning Interest Into an Action Ministry

Approximately thirty-five years ago a ministry was birthed to share the Gospel using food as

a key ingredient to meet a hunger need and create an opportunity to present the Gospel in whatever shape the circumstance(s) dictated.  This ministry was COOKING FOR CHRIST.  It had countless opportunities to feed and share throughout the Southeast, but primarily in Alabama.

We regularly served in Correctional Facilities, Churches, Schools, Underserved areas, storm damaged areas and sometimes for social gatherings, always with the same intent of sharing the Gospel.  It was begun with a small group in the First United Methodist Church in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, under the direction of Mr. Jim DeFord, and some key participants from other churches. One of those individuals was Dr. Robert Amason who worshipped at Calvary Baptist Church in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

In midyear, 2010, we cooked 2200 meals, with a group from Louisiana, and served the inmates and officers in an Alabama Correctional Facility.  I shared a book about that church’s cooking ministry with Dr. Amason.  God gave him a vision for a commercial-grade, fully self-contained mobile kitchen that could do Kingdom work wherever it was needed.   A number of people made suggestions and helped in the design, but Bob made it happen. He named this phase of our ministry together HERE TO SERVE.  It was completed, and he and Gary Johnson picked it up at the factory in late Fall, 2012.  We actually began using it in December, 2012.

In the 12 months preceding his death on May 3, 2019, we spent hours talking and praying about how to increase the use and effectiveness of the mobile kitchen, and how to put it into a ministry model that maximized its outreach.

Under the direction of the Holy Spirit an non-profit corporation has been legally created named HERE TO SERVE, and  began its inaugural ministry thru disaster relief the week of October 12, 2020.

We are now prepared to begin to fulfill the vision of HERE TO SERVE.
